UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl has made the construction of a new Chang-Lin Tien Center for East Asian Studies one of his top campus priorities.
The University is proud of its long-standing ties to East Asia, the superb collections of its East Asian Library, and the distinguished research and teaching conducted by its Institute of East Asian Studies and Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures.
But Berkeley’s library collections and programs in East Asian studies are today scattered across campus in inadequate facilities. The construction of a new Chang-Lin Tien Center for East Asian Studies in the heart of the campus will bring together the University’s incomparable resources and programs in East Asian studies in a facility commensurate with their high distinction. In doing so, it will make Berkeley one of the chief centers for East Asian studies in the world.
Chancellor Berdahl and the UC Berkeley community are currently raising funds for the Chang-Lin Tien Center for East Asian Studies. The Tien Center comprises two buildings — the C.V. Starr East Asian Library and a second structure that will house the Institute of East Asian Studies and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures. This new center will acknowledge the many contributions made by Dr. Tien, the great Asian-American scholar and teacher to the University, to American higher education, and to the world.
